Most of the solar radiation from the Sun is absorbed by the ocean. The ocean stores a lot of energy as heat and it gets most of it's heat around the equator. So the ocean is definitley going to be much warmer around the equator than the ocean along the poles. The weather patterns are mostly caused by ocean currents. Cold air is more dense than warm air so the cold air goes down while the warm air rises and this causes land and sea breeze. The ocean also transports warm water from the equator to the poles and cold wter from the poles to the equator. Without currents, the temperatures at different places around the world would be more harsh and that would cause more of the world to be unhabitable. The temperatures around the equator would be extremely hot and the temperatures closer to the poles would be freezing.
